TORONTO —Statistics Canada has released its cross-border travel data for April 2026.
For the first time since December 2024, there was a year-over-year increase in Canadians’ overall return trips from the U.S., driven by an increase in return trips by car, up 5.8%. Canadian-resident return trips by air from the U.S. were down 8.1%. All in all Canadian resident return trips from the U.S. totalled 1.8 million, up 1.4% year over year.
Since we’re now more than a year into the cross-border Canada-to-U.S. declines, the year-over-year differentials are narrowing amid the ‘new normal.’
Notably, when comparing the number of trips in April 2026 with April 2024, there’s a 30% decline, fuelled by the drop in car trips (down 31.4% in April 2026 vs. April 2024) and air (down 26.4% in April 2026 vs. April 2024).
Back to 2026 vs. 2025, Canadian-resident return trips from overseas countries showed another increase, by 5.3% for a total of 1.3 million, compared to April 2025.
