MONTREAL — Transat has followed suit with Canada’s other major tour operators with a suspension of its Cuba program, indefinitely.
The news came after after Sunwing Vacations Group, and ACV, announced their intentions to suspend Cuba operations for the foreseeable future.
“In light of the current geopolitical situation in Cuba and the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the resumption of tourism activities, Transat has made the decision to suspend its operations to Cuba for an indefinite period,” Transat told Travelweek.
Air Transat’s flights to Cuba had already been suspended from February until November.
“We are now proactively adjusting our winter program to redeploy this capacity elsewhere in our network and offer our customers alternative travel options,” said the company.
“We are aware of the impact this situation may have on our passengers’ travel plans, and we have not taken this decision lightly.”
Transat says customers who had booked travel for next winter will be contacted in the coming days and offered alternative options.
The tour operators’ indefinite suspensions of what was for decades one of Canada’s most popular sun destinations is the latest blow amid sanctions and the oil blockade by the U.S. administration.
The move follows exits by hotel companies Blue Diamond Resorts, Iberostar, Archipelago International and Melia in recent days.
AIR CANADA NOTICE
Air Canada updated its Cuba info on June 5, a day after ACV posted its June 4 notice about suspension of operations to the island.
“Air Canada is postponing its resumption of service between Canada and Cuba until further notice. Customers with travel booked will be contacted directly with their travel options,” says Air Canada on its site.
