Transat announces indefinite suspension of Cuba operations, following Sunwing, ACV

MONTREAL — Transat is following suit with Canada’s other major tour operators with a suspension of its Cuba program, indefinitely.

The news comes after Sunwing Vacations Group, and Air Canada Vacations, announced their intentions to suspend Cuba operations for the foreseeable future.

“In light of the current geopolitical situation in Cuba and the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the resumption of tourism activities, Transat has made the decision to suspend its operations to Cuba for an indefinite period,” Transat told Travelweek.

Air Transat’s flights to Cuba had already been suspended from February until November.

“We are now proactively adjusting our winter program to redeploy this capacity elsewhere in our network and offer our customers alternative travel options,” says the company.

“We are aware of the impact this situation may have on our passengers’ travel plans, and we have not taken this decision lightly.”

Transat says customers who had booked travel for next winter will be contacted in the coming days and offered alternative options.

The tour operators’ indefinite suspensions of what was for decades one of Canada’s most popular sun destinations is the latest blow, precipitated by the U.S. administration’s sanctions and oil blockade.

“Despite intensified economic pressures from the United States, Cuba remains firmly open for global tourism, with its attractions, hospitality infrastructure, and logistics fully operational,” said the Cuba Tourist Board in a statement this morning.

The tour operator suspensions follow exits in recent days by hotel companies Blue Diamond Resorts, Iberostar, Archipelago International and Melia.
