Sunwing increases free checked baggage allowance

TORONTO — Sunwing Airlines is increasing the complimentary checked baggage allowance per passenger from 20 kg (44 lbs) to 23 kg (50 lbs) for travel as of Nov. 1, 2015.

Applicable on all services to Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America, along with Florida cruise packages, the enhanced 23 kg baggage allowance applies to the first piece of checked luggage only. As an added convenience to travellers, the airline has also simplified its excess baggage policy and will be introducing a flat fee for overweight and oversize items; rather than the sliding scale currently adopted by many airlines.

In addition, for the first time the airline will allow passengers to check a second bag, if desired, subject to a supplement of $36.75 (or $31.50 if prepaid up to 48 hours in advance) per direction, including all taxes.

President of Sunwing Airlines, Mark Williams, said “we believe that this increase in our complimentary checked baggage allowance is great news for customers as it allows them extra flexibility when packing for their vacation. Our experience tells us that the majority of travellers do prefer the convenience of travelling with just one suitcase, so increasing the complimentary checked baggage allowance for the first checked piece of luggage is sure to be popular with our passengers, especially for families travelling with young children who often have more to pack”.

In line with other national carriers, the airline has also made amendments to policies on its domestic services and flights to the U.S. for new bookings effective Oct. 16, 2015. Each passenger on these routes will also be entitled to an increased checked luggage allowance of 23 kg, however there will be a service charge of $26.25 (or $21 if prepaid up to 48 hours in advance) inclusive of taxes, per direction, for their bag. Effective for new bookings departing Jan. 5, 2016 onwards, the inflight service on domestic and U.S. routes will now comprise of a buy on board menu with a selection of meal, snack and beverage options.
