No “Mean Streets” for new De Niro hotel in lovely Covent Garden

LONDON — He’s a hotelier, a restaurateur and a co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival in New York CIty. He’s also, of course, an Academy Award-winning actor. Now Robert De Niro is eyeing a London site for his next venture, pending permission from city planners.

De Niro’s proposed Covent Garden enclave, called The Wellington Hotel, is being pitched as an 83-room boutique property, according to TravelMole. The hotel would include two restaurants and a high-end spa and would overlook a central courtyard. The hotel’s opening is scheduled for 2019, but De Niro has to get permission to build it first, as construction would mean knocking through six other buildings. “The Wellington Hotel would honour the heritage of the area, while bringing the best of what we’ve done in New York to London,” he said.
