Japan’s newest sightseeing train is so luxurious it’s already sold out

TOKYO — Good luck booking your clients on Tokyo’s new Suite Train Shiki-Shima. The luxury train, which is more or less a five-star hotel on rails, is already booked solid until 2018.

After debuting on May 1, the luxury 34-passenger train has generated big buzz for its ultra-luxurious look and amenities. Onboard, lucky guests will find 17 lacquered suites, some with a working fireplace or second-floor loft, as well as glass-enclosed panoramic observation cars and gourmet meals by chef Katsuhiro Nakamura, Japan’s first Michelin-starred chef.

But it’s these luxe details that make it virtually impossible to book a suite onboard. According to Condé Nast Traveler, the train is already sold out until 2018. And that’s not all: if your clients are lucky enough to find an opening through lottery-style applications, a room will set them back nearly US$3,000 per night!

Shiki-Shima’s parent company, East Japan Railway, holds these application periods sporadically, during which prospective passengers can fill out an online form to enter a lottery for future trips. Once they secure a suite, they’ll depart from platform 13 1Ž2 at Tokyo’s Ueno station on one-, two- or three-night roundtrip journeys through northeast Japan.
