Heavy rains cause washouts, flooding in central Newfoundland

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – Heavy rains have delayed efforts to repair some roads in central Newfoundland, where washouts and flooding have been reported in Bonavista North, Fogo and the Baie Verte Peninsula.

Up to 100 millimetres of rain drenched the area during a 24-hour period between Tuesday and Wednesday.

Residents in the town of Hare Bay have reported extensive damage caused by flooding.

Some roads are closed, others are down to one lane and driving in some areas requires a police escort.

Transportation Minister David Brazil says crews are waiting for conditions to allow for further repairs.

Meanwhile, Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro warned of the possible power outages in Springdale, Little Bay and King’s Point because of flooding at a terminal station.
