G Adventures’ Bruce Poon Tip awarded honourary doctorate

TORONTO —Bruce Poon Tip can now add  ‘Doctor’ to his name.

The founder of G Adventures has been honoured with an Honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD) by the University of Victoria at this year’s virtual convocation ceremony. His doctorate was one of seven honourary degrees awarded to recipients for 2021 who were all recognized for being leaders in the fields of scholarship, research, teaching, the creative arts and public service.

During his acceptance speech, Poon Tip acknowledged the sacrifice of his parents who relocated to Canada from Trinidad when he was a child, and encouraged graduates to live a purposeful life.

“I’m overwhelmed to receive this honour, and even more excited to be associated with the University of Victoria, which shares my values in so many ways, especially with regards to creative learning and pushing the boundaries of innovation.

“Let me first say that this honour is less about me and my achievements, and more about the decisions and sacrifices of my community that has made me who I am, and gave me the auspicious gift of opportunity.

“There’s a famous saying; love what you do and you’ll never work a day in your life, and I’m a big supporter of that. Live a purposeful life – if you find your purpose in what you do, then that’s your destiny. And when destiny calls, be prepared to listen,” said Poon Tip.

During the online celebration, Kevin Hall, president of the University of Victoria, said the university’s honorary degrees are awarded to people with exceptional records of distinction and achievement, but more importantly, to game-changers.

“Your commitment to leadership and humanity, pursuit of a better future for people on the planet, and your remarkable, wide-ranging accomplishments are truly uplifting in these challenging times. You and your enduring legacies reflect the important role our university plays in fostering our leaders of tomorrow. You inspire our graduates and our entire community to pursue their dreams of a better world with passion, and determination,” said Hall.

The honorary doctorate is the second to be accepted by Poon Tip. He was also awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws from Capilano University in 2019.
