TORONTO — Every problem has a solution – and for some European airports unable to keep up with EES lineups, that solution is to just switch off the system for EES checks.

Europe’s Entry/Exit System caused hours-long lineups for some gateways earlier this summer after the full roll-out in April.

Industry groups say one of the main reasons for improved EES lineups has been the use of a built-in contingency that allows EU member states to temporarily suspend EES processing in exceptional circumstances when lineups become excessive, according to reports in The Times and Politico.

Governments must notify EU border authorities when using the measure and explain why it has been activated.

All good things must come to an end, and the flexibility to suspend EES processing is scheduled to expire early next month and, according to EU border agency Frontex, is not expected to be renewed.

Travel and aviation organizations are now urging officials to extend the provision. Airports including Rome’s Fiumicino Airport as well as gateways in Greece, France, Portugal and Spain have also been temporarily switching off EES checks during busy periods, according to The Times.
