Costa Rica sees big jump from Canada, with visitation up 26% thanks to strong lift – and that ‘Pure Vida’ vibe

TORONTO — There’s never been a better time for Canadian travellers to head to Costa Rica. That’s partly because there’s never been more lift to Costa Rica from Canada. Air Canada, WestJet, Air Transat and Porter – all are onboard with the ‘Pure Vida Republic.’

It’s also because Costa Rica is good for the soul, says Gustavo Inciarte, Trade Account Manager, Costa Rica Tourism Board.

“You can go hiking in Costa Rica, you can scuba dive and snorkel, you can do so many things in the country’s wonderful natural surroundings, but most importantly time spent in Costa Rica is guaranteed to help you have a healthier life,” says Inciarte with a smile.

“DISCONNECT – AND RECONNECT”

Inciarte and the VoX International team, which represents the Costa Rica Tourism Board in the Canadian market, welcomed close to 100 travel advisors at last night’s Toronto stop for the ‘Energía Pura Vida’ Costa Rica Roadshow 2026.

Arcadia Earth, at The Well in downtown Toronto, proved a perfect venue for a Costa Rica event. It’s a multi-sensory immersive art experience designed to inspire visitors to take action towards a more sustainable future.

Costa Rica is a nature lover’s dream and famously home to nearly 6% of the world’s species, despite its small size, just 0.03% of the Earth’s surface. With one of the highest biodiversity densities in the world, the country is home to more than 800 different types of birds and some 227 different types of mammals.

Canada is Costa Rica’s second-largest market, after the U.S. “Canada is a very important because the Canadian people appreciate the tourism offer we have, especially sustainable tourism,” Ireth Rodríguez, told Travelweek. Rodríguez is the Director of the Vacation Segment Promotion and Development Department for the Costa Rica Tourism Board, and part of the Costa Rica roadshow delegation with 16 suppliers.

As Rodríguez put it, Costa Rica “is a place where visitors can disconnect – and reconnect.”

26% INCREASE IN CANADIAN VISITATION

Costa Rica welcomed 26.4% more Canadians in the first four months of 2026 (173,439) vs. the first four months of 2025 (137,033). It’s an incredible jump. “This growth reflects Canadians’ increasing interest in destinations beyond the United States, with Costa Rica’s natural beauty, adventure experiences, and safe travel environment making it a top choice for unforgettable getaways,” says Inciarte.

Air Transat and Porter were seasonal to Costa Rica but they’re going to continue their flights, he adds. Porter’s first flights to Costa Rica launched in December 2025. “We’re excited to see Porter Airlines launching new flights from Toronto Pearson to San José starting Dec. 2, 2026, operating four times weekly, providing Canadians with even more convenient travel options,” says Inciarte.

Meanwhile Air Transat will introduce a new nonstop route from Quebec City to San José starting Dec. 15, 2026, with one flight per week. “With these additions, Canadian travellers now have full airlift from all four major airlines – Air Canada, WestJet, Transat, and Porter – operating from both the East and West coasts. This expanded connectivity makes Costa Rica more accessible than ever and supports continued growth in this important market.”

“IT’S BECOME THE DESTINATION TO VISIT IN 2026 AND 2027”

Inciarte’s passion for the destination is heartfelt. “Costa Rica is truly amazing,” he says. “Beyond its world-renowned beaches, rainforests and volcanoes, the country offers incredible culinary and gastronomy experiences. Canadian visitors can explore local markets, sample traditional dishes and enjoy the rich culture that infuses every region of the country.”

The strong lift will get clients there, and the product will keep them coming back. “With full airlift from Canada, Costa Rica is not just a popular destination – it has become the destination to visit in 2026 and 2027,” says Inciarte. “The combination of culture, adventure, natural beauty and excellent connectivity ensures that every visitor leaves with unforgettable memories.

“We are thrilled with the continued success of the destination and look forward to welcoming more Canadians to experience everything Costa Rica has to offer.”
