$3 billion airport built for just 105,000 visitors

ASHGABAT, TURKMENISTAN — Turkmenistan is home to one of the most impressive new airports in the world. A massive $2.3 billion ($3.07 billion CAD) was spent on the new airport, according to the BBC.

The sprawling structure takes the shape of a flying falcon, a design that is similar to the mascot of Turkmenistan Airlines, the national carrier.

Lines will not be an issue at the airport, with a capacity to process more than 1,600 passengers an hour. According to government figures, only 105,000 tourists visited the Central Asian country in 2015.

President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov stated the country has “solid transit potential”. No kidding.

The capital city is also known for other unique structures such as a publishing house in the shape of a book, and two giant statues of the current president and his late predecessor.
