MSC Poesia detained in Miami by U.S. Coast Guard since Sunday; sailing now cancelled

MIAMI — MSC Cruises’ MSC Poesia has been detained at the Port of Miami, with passengers onboard for its 11-night Caribbean and Central America sailing while the U.S. Coast Guard conducts an inspection.

The ship was detained on Sunday, Nov. 1, and remained in port as of the latest reports on Nov. 3.

According to one post on Facebook earlier this morning: “Cruise cancelled… no other info.  They’re giving a full refund and allowing us to stay on ship until noon Thursday [Nov. 5] to give time for travel arrangement planning.  We’re fortunate to live in the U.S. and be able to jet right home, most on this cruise don’t.”

As first reported by CBS News, the Coast Guard’s Miami sector confirmed the detention on Monday, saying its teams were checking the ship’s compliance with international standards and U.S. regulations.

The agency said its priority was the safety of passengers, crew, the vessel and the environment.

MSC Cruises confirmed the situation in a statement to CBS News, posted before the social media updates about the sailing’s cancellation.

“The departure of MSC Poesia has been delayed while the U.S. Coast Guard conducts an inspection aboard the ship while it is docked in port,” said the cruise line.

“We are fully cooperating with authorities as they complete their inspection. As this process is ongoing, we are unable to provide further information at this time.”

According to Cruise Critic, the affected voyage is an 11-night Caribbean and Central America sailing.

MSC Poesia can accommodate up to 3,223 passengers and more than 1,000 crew members. The number of guests onboard has not been confirmed.

Another passenger vented on social media: “I am deeply disappointed and outraged by MSC Cruises. We understand that safety comes above all else, but the lack of transparency, communication and respect for passengers is absolutely unacceptable.”

The Coast Guard has not identified the specific issue that prompted the inspection.
