TORONTO — Eligible adult Canadians can now renew their passports online, as the federal government expands access to the digital service nationwide.

The announcement, made Tuesday by the Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, removes the previous limit on the number of Canadians who could use the online renewal system, giving all eligible adults in Canada access to the service.

The expanded program is designed to make passport renewal more convenient by allowing Canadians to complete the entire renewal process online, including submitting their application, passport photo and payment digitally. The option eliminates the need to mail documents or visit a Service Canada Centre for eligible renewals.

The government says the online service will be particularly beneficial for Canadians who face barriers to accessing in-person services, including those living in rural or remote communities and individuals with mobility challenges.

“Canadians expect passport services that work for their lives. Expanding online renewal gives eligible Canadians a simpler, more convenient way to renew their passports, without unnecessary barriers or delays. This is part of the Government of Canada’s ongoing work to modernize passport services and deliver public services that are responsive to the needs of Canadians today,” said Metlege Diab.

The expansion is part of the federal government’s broader effort to modernize passport services. Recent improvements have included the launch of an online passport application status checker, expanded access to 10-business-day passport service at select Service Canada Centres and the introduction of a passport service guarantee, which promises eligible applications will be processed within 30 business days or the passport will be issued free of charge.

Traditional in-person and mail-in renewal options will continue to be available for Canadians who prefer or require those methods.

Canadians can check their eligibility and access the online passport renewal service through the Government of Canada’s website.
