Early World Cup tourism data reveals unexpected travel trends

TORONTO — With just 10 days to go for the FIFA World Cup 2026, Airalo data hints at inbound tourism trends for the three host countries.

Preliminary stats for international travel patterns for June for Canada, Mexico and the U.S. show “a massive shift in how fans actually travelled,” says travel eSIM platform Airalo, based on its year-over-year data.

“While it is widely assumed that the U.S would completely dominate tourism for the World Cup, June’s data shows that international visitors heavily favoured Canada and Mexico instead,” says Airalo.

Based on the company’s travel eSIM platform stats, out of 10 major competing nations for FIFA World Cup 2026, eight saw negative YoY travel growth to the U.S in June. Traditional powerhouse fanbases pulled back significantly, including Spain (-26.4%), Germany (-18.9%), and France (-8%), says Airalo.

Meanwhile Canada “successfully captured the European market in June,” says the company. Based on its data, travel to Canada surged by 43.6% from France and 23.8% from Germany compared to last year. The Germany vs. Cote d’Ivoire match took place in Toronto on June 20.

Airalo’s June 2026 data also shows that Croatia’s travel to Canada shot up by 363.5%, ahead of the July 2 Portugal vs. Croatia match in Toronto. And Morocco’s travel to Mexico skyrocketed 1600%. The Morocco vs. Netherlands June 29 match took place at Mexico’s Estadio Monterrey.
