“Strange morning for sure!”: Agents relieved airport operations back on track

TORONTO — A travel advisorʻs day is busy enough without bomb threats temporarily upending airport operations – but thatʻs exactly what happened in several cities across Canada this morning.

The early morning threats affected airports in Ottawa, Montreal, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Calgary and Vancouver. The FAA said there were “brief ground stops” at airports in Montreal and Ottawa, and they were lifted at around 7:40 a.m.

As anyone whoʻs ever flown is well aware, nothing is taken more seriously – or brings airport operations to a standstill –  like a bomb threat.

After this morningʻs incident airports have resumed normal operations, according to NAV Canadaʻs latest update. However possible delays are still a factor.

“Following the evacuation of a number of our sites and subsequent threat assessment by authorities, service is gradually resuming at affected sites,” said NAV Canada. “Travellers are advised to check directly with their airline for the latest updates, as delays are expected. We thank airlines and passengers for their patience as we work towards normal operations.”

The update on YOWʻs site says: “The Ottawa Airport is currently investigating a security incident. Operations may be disrupted; please check the status of your flight before travelling to the airport.”

Vancouver Airport says, “at this time flights at YVR are operating normally, however as always we recommend passengers check YVR.ca or with their airline to get the latest flight information.”

“YUL is back in full operation,” says Montreal-Trudeau International Airport.

Travel advisors Travelweek spoke to were breathing a sigh of relief their clients werenʻt impacted.

“Strange morning for sure! Thankfully I only have two clients inbound to YVR scheduled for today, and not until late this evening. Hopefully the situation is handled by then,” said Stephen Brunetta, an Envoyage travel advisor and travel manager in North Vancouver.

In Calgary, The Travel Lady, Lesley Keyter, said she updated the situation during her scheduled segment this morning on Global News. “I called the office to check if we’ve had any people affected by this and so far we haven’t. They do say that the delays at Calgary airport are minimal.”

Another Calgary-based agent, Heidi Hurst, founder of Heidiway Travel, said luckily she doesnʻt have anyone travelling through YYC today. “This is really unsettling and I hope it resolves safely and quickly,” she added.
