“A once-in-a-lifetime way to experience Antarctica”: Scenic

Expedition is at the heart of every Scenic Eclipse journey to Antarctica, as Scenic Group tells Travelweek in this edition of Take 5. If you’ve always wondered when’s the best time to explore Antarctica – or what to pack – read on …

1. So many Canadians have Antarctica on their bucket list. In the interest of converting those bucket lists to done-it lists, can you share some of the most compelling motivators to experience Antarctica with Scenic?

“Antarctica is one of the most awe-inspiring and pristine destinations on Earth, and Scenic Eclipse offers a once-in-a-lifetime way to experience it. What sets us apart is the seamless combination of ultra-luxury, immersive exploration, and world-class discovery.

“Onboard Scenic Eclipse I and II, guests enjoy all-verandah suites, up to 10 dining experiences, and the personalized attention of a nearly 1:1 staff-to-guest ratio.

“But it’s our Discovery Team that truly transforms the journey. Made up of experts in marine biology, glaciology, history and more, they offer daily Zodiac excursions, guided hikes, and kayaking experiences that bring Antarctica to life.

“For the 2025/26 season, we’re also thrilled to welcome leading Antarctic experts like Dr. Ian Godfrey and Dr. Louise Emmerson, who will share captivating insights through onboard lectures. It’s not just a cruise – it’s a deeply enriching, bucket-list-fulfilling adventure.”

2. Antarctica is a destination like no other, and that means a packing list like no other. What should the savvy traveller bring for this trip?

“Packing smart is key. Scenic provides guests with a complimentary expedition parka and use of polar boots, which saves valuable suitcase space. Guests should bring thermal base layers, waterproof gloves, a warm hat, neck gaiter or balaclava, moisture-wicking socks and UV-protective sunglasses. Layers are essential — breathable but warm clothing that can adapt to changing conditions.

“A common mistake? Overpacking with bulky items or forgetting sunscreen — UV rays reflect intensely off the snow and ice. Another is assuming formalwear is required. Scenic Eclipse is elegant but relaxed — think refined resort wear for evenings. Don’t forget a good camera and plenty of memory cards — you’ll want to capture the breathtaking wildlife and landscapes.”

3. What is the best time of year for an Antarctica cruise, and why?

“The Antarctic cruising season runs from late October to early March, during the Southern Hemisphere’s summer. The Antarctic cruising season spans from late October to early March, aligning with the Southern Hemisphere’s summer. Each period offers unique experiences …

  • Late October to early December: This early season is characterized by dramatic ice formations and pristine snow. It’s the prime time for penguin courtship and nesting, with fluffy chicks beginning to find their feet.
  • Mid-December to January: These are the warmest months, offering excellent wildlife viewing opportunities, including seal pups and hatching chicks.
  • February to early March: This period sees increasing whale activity and young penguins exploring their surroundings.

“For those seeking rare wildlife encounters, the 22 October and 22 November 2025 departures to Antarctica, the Falkland Islands, and South Georgia are particularly special. Guests can …

  • Witness the world’s largest King Penguin colony on South Georgia Island
  • Experience the majestic Emperor Penguin colony on Snow Hill Island via an optional helicopter tour. Snow Hill Island, located on the edge of the Antarctic Peninsula in the Weddell Sea, is home to around 4,000 breeding pairs of Emperor penguins. In the early season, from late October to early December, guests may see fluffy chicks taking their first steps.

“Our East Antarctica & Ross Sea itineraries sail in January and February, when ice conditions allow access to these remote regions, and wildlife activity is at its peak.”

4. What can you tell us about the technology onboard Scenic Eclipse I and II, and how does that technology enhance the cruise experience?

“Scenic Eclipse is truly a next-generation discovery yacht. Both Eclipse I and II are equipped with state-of-the-art technology designed to enhance safety, comfort, and exploration. This includes custom-built stabilizers that are 50% larger than those on other vessels, delivering an incredibly smooth ride even in rough seas.

“Our GPS Dynamic Positioning system allows the ship to remain stationary without dropping anchor — protecting sensitive seabeds. Guests can explore further with our fleet of Zodiacs, tandem kayaks, paddleboards, or go deeper with our custom-built submersible, Scenic Neptune, and our two state-of-the-art helicopters.

“Even the onboard theatre is equipped with advanced AV technology to host expert-led lectures that bring Antarctica’s history and ecology to life.”

5. Can you also share details about the expedition features with Scenic Eclipse I and II?

“Expedition is at the heart of every Scenic Eclipse journey to Antarctica. Guests are accompanied by a 20+ member Discovery Team, comprising marine biologists, glaciologists, ornithologists, and historians who lead daily excursions and enrich the experience through insightful briefings and Q&As.

“Unique to Scenic, our 2025/26 East Antarctica & Ross Sea voyages will be joined by two renowned guest lecturers.

“Dr. Ian Godfrey, lead conservator for the Mawson’s Huts Foundation, brings incredible knowledge of Antarctic heritage and the great explorers. Dr. Louise Emmerson, senior researcher with the Australian Antarctic Division since 2001, will join Mawson’s Antarctica: Along the East Coast, where she’ll also conduct scientific research onboard.

“They will present engaging lectures in the Scenic Eclipse theatre and join landings to share real-time insights on wildlife, history, and environmental conservation. This level of expert access, combined with our world-class expedition equipment and all-inclusive luxury, creates a truly unforgettable journey.”
