Hawaii makes changes to Safe Travels Hawaii Program

HONOLULU — Hawaii has updated its Safe Travels Hawaii Program to include a reduced quarantine period for travellers.

Launched in October 2020, the comprehensive program allows travellers to pre-test for COVID-19 as an alternative to Hawaii’s mandatory quarantine.

The new changes are as follows:

SAFE TRAVELS QUARANTINE

  • As of Jan. 3, 2022, Safe Travels Mandatory Quarantine period will be reduced from 10 days to five days. For travellers who are currently on 10-day quarantine, if they’ve hit their 5-day ‘mark’ on Jan. 3 or later, they will be released from quarantine after the fifth day. For example, if Jan. 3 is their fifth day, they will be released from quarantine on Jan. 4.
  • Travellers who arrive without a pre-travel test result or aren’t fully vaccinated, their quarantine period is five days. Day 1 is counted from day of arrival (ie. arrives on Jan. 3, quarantine through Jan. 7, released on Jan. 8). This affects only domestic travel from the U.S. and its Territories (direct international travellers fall under Federal CDC guidelines).
  • Revised COVID-positive isolation and quarantine policy details can be found here.
  • Guidelines for COVID-1i-positive travellers will change. If COVID-19 positive, regardless of vaccination status, they must: isolate for at least five days and until symptoms are gone; and continue to wear a mask for five days after isolation. If the traveller is still symptomatic on day 5, they are advised to seek medical attention and quarantine until a COVID-19 test can be taken. If positive, they must isolate in place for an additional five days and don’t travel.

SAFE TRAVELS HEALTH QUESTIONNAIRE

  • As of Jan. 4, the completion of the Health Questionnaire prior to departure is no longer required.
  • Travellers who wish to be exempt from the 5-day mandatory quarantine must submit the same documentation as is currently required. Once their exemption documentation has been accepted, their QR code will turn green. The traveller must still be screened and a green checkmark will appear next to ‘Screened: Yes’ after the screening process is completed. This is what the updated ‘Trips’ page will look like when hotels and rental car agencies check travellers’ exempt status. If the traveller has minors on their Safe Travels trip, those minors must also be exempt in order for the QR code to turn green.
