The latest on WestJet strike talks; Air Canada weighs in

WestJet says it wants to be “a truly national carrier”; launches first intra-Quebec flights

CALGARY — WestJet is soaring in Quebec with the launch of its first nonstop route within the province, connecting Montreal and Quebec City with four flights daily. With several new Quebec routes launching this year WestJet says it will add 105 more flights per week in the province, a capacity increase of 74%.

“WestJet’s introduction of our first-ever point-to-point service within Quebec brings lower fares and an elevated inflight experience to ‘la belle province’ and is the next step in our mandate to become a truly national carrier,” said Charles Duncan, President, WestJet Encore. “The communities of Montreal and Quebec City will enjoy having a choice of air carriers on this popular route, as WestJet provides another convenient option for residents who travel within the province for business and leisure. As always, we are committed to making air travel in Canada better.”

Gaëtan Gagné, President and Chief Executive Officer of Aéroport de Quebec, said “more competition in the market has a direct impact on the price of airfare, for the benefit of the travellers in our community,” adding that WestJet’s increased presence in the Québec-Montreal corridor “will give more access to more destinations through its network and that of its airline partners.”

Earlier this year WestJet announced it was making a significant investment in the Quebec market, with increased service and new routes to and from Montreal–Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport as well as Quebec City’s Jean Lesage International Airport. On March 15, WestJet launched twice-daily service between Montreal and Halifax. This new Montreal-Quebec City route that took flight today is the second of three new Quebec routes for the carrier. On Oct. 15 WestJet will begin twice-daily service between Montreal and Boston.

The Quebec-City/Montreal route is operated by WestJet’s regional airline, WestJet Encore, on its fleet of Canadian-made Bombardier Q400s.

WestJet’s flights depart Montreal daily at 7:45 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 4:10 p.m. and 8 p.m. From Quebec City daily flights take off at 6:15 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 2 p.m. and 5:38 p.m.
