NEW DELHI – U.S. authorities have upgraded India’s aviation safety rating, enabling Indian carriers to increase the number of flights they operate to the United States.

The U.S. Embassy in New Delhi made the announcement Wednesday after a meeting between U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx and India’s Minister of Civil Aviation Ashok Gajapathi Raju.

The Federal Aviation Authority’s renewed Category 1 rating permits India’s air carriers to add flights to the United States, and to offer code-share flights with U.S. carriers.

The FAA downgraded India’s rating in January 2014, after assessing that the country’s civil aviation safety oversight did not meet international norms.
