Stylish & Sophisticated: Brisbane is Back

Sun-drenched Brisbane is one of Australia’s most up-and-coming cities. The Queensland capital is surprisingly sophisticated, combining art and adventure with youthful enthusiasm. Brisbane’s world-class restaurants and museums, distinctly flavoured neighborhoods and tons of attractions, have helped the subtropical city evolve from a stopover city to a destination in its own right.

Barely a stone’s throw through from the wonders of the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane has traditionally been a gateway to shimmering rainforests and reefs, unspoiled beaches, islands, unique wildlife and fabulous coastal cities. Yet the city is drawing more attention as a city worth spending time in.

Vibrant Queen Street makes a great place to start any visit to Brisbane. This pedestrian-only street in heart of the city is lined with fabulous shopping and restaurants. Feast your eyes on the Treasury Casino & Hotel, dubbed ‘Australia’s grandest heritage building’, then explore South Bank, Brisbane’s premier lifestyle and cultural destination.

When you’re ready for some sunbathing, sink your toes into South Bank’s famous man-made beach, an urban white-sand oasis. Take a water taxi across the river to New Farm Park to enjoy 37 hectares of tranquil parkland and discover the historic Brisbane Powerhouse, which plays host to live arts, weekend farmers markets and a seasonal moonlight cinema. For a rush of adrenaline and fantastic river views, scale the top of Brisbane’s iconic Story Bridge. Don’t forget your camera!

If hip bars and funky cafes are more your speed, get yourself to Brisbane’s quirky West End. Find yourself among pretty young things at the clubs and bars in Fortitude Valley, the city’s pumping entertainment district, and get views of a lifetime atop Mount Coot-tha. At the base of the mountain you can feed kangaroos and cuddle with koalas at the award-winning Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. What could be more Australian than that?
