Newfoundland police probe reports of lasers aimed at planes

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. — The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is investigating reports of lasers being aimed at aircraft coming in for landing at St. John’s International Airport.

The lasers appear to be coming from the Signal Hill area.

The captain of a WestJet flight en route to St. John’s from Halifax reported that a green laser struck him in the eye after shining into the cockpit of the 737 last Wednesday.

The aircraft landed safely, but the captain and the first officer took some time off to rest following the incident.

It is the third such incident reported by flight crews in the St. John’s area in recent weeks.

Transport Canada says it takes such incidents very seriously.
