Canadian travel to U.S. rises for third straight month: StatCan

OTTAWA — The number of Canadian-resident return trips from the U.S. increased 5% in June 2026 vs. June 2025, for a total of 2.3 million trips to the U.S.

The latest data from Statistics Canada comes as the trade war clock counts down to midnight tonight when the U.S. administration’s tariff threat on some $28 billion worth of Canadian goods is scheduled to take effect.

THIRD STRAIGHT MONTH OF GROWTH

It’s the third consecutive month of growth following 15 consecutive months of year-over-year decreases. However Canadian-resident return trips from the U.S. were 24.6% below their June 2024 level.

Canadian-resident return trips from the U.S. by car rose 7.6% compared with the same month one year earlier to reach 1.7 million in June 2026, with 66.2% of these being same-day trips. Return trips by air continued to fall, down 1.2% year over year, settling at 546,500. At the same time, return trips by cruise ship rose 13.6% to 20,700.

Canadian residents made 906,400 return trips from overseas countries in June, inching up 0.2% from a year earlier.

CONSUMER PRICE INDEX

Meanwhile StatCan’s Consumer Price Index for July 2026 shows higher tour prices, coinciding with higher prices for hotels and flights to U.S. destination cities for the World Cup. Year over year, prices for travel tours rose at a faster pace in July (+15.2%) compared with June (+6.8%). Airfares were up 12% year over year in July following a 9.6% increase in June, with higher jet fuel costs a contributing factor.
