TORONTO — Air India will introduce its new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner on the Toronto-Delhi route beginning Aug. 1, bringing the airline’s latest cabin products to Canada for the first time.

The aircraft upgrade coincides with the restoration of daily service between Toronto and Delhi after the airline temporarily reduced frequencies to five weekly flights in June and July due to high fuel prices and geopolitical challenges.

The new aircraft will also eliminate the technical fuel stop in Vienna on flights from Delhi to Toronto, cutting travel time by nearly three hours. The Delhi-Toronto flight will now take up to 17 hours, down from approximately 20 hours, while the Toronto-Delhi service will continue operating nonstop in about 16 hours. The removal of the fuel stop remains subject to available airspace.

PREMIUM ECONOMY DEBUTS IN CANADA

The new Boeing 787-9 features a three-class configuration with 30 Business Class suites, 28 Premium Economy seats and 238 Economy seats.

The Toronto-Delhi route will also become the first Canadian service to offer Air India’s Premium Economy cabin, featuring a 2-3-2 seating layout, 38-inch seat pitch, increased recline, adjustable headrests and leg rests, and 13.3-inch 4K entertainment screens.

Business Class passengers will have access to private suites with direct aisle access, lie-flat beds measuring 79 inches, wireless charging, personal storage and 17-inch 4K entertainment screens.

Across all cabins, travellers can expect upgraded inflight entertainment powered by the Thales AVANT Up system with more than 3,000 hours of content, Bluetooth audio connectivity, USB-A and USB-C charging ports and AC power outlets. The airline has also introduced new mood lighting inspired by Indian wellness traditions, refreshed menus featuring Indian and international cuisine, new chinaware and glassware, redesigned amenity kits and upgraded bedding.

CONNECTIONS ACROSS INDIA

The daily schedule, effective Aug. 1, includes Flight AI187 departing Delhi at 1:45 a.m. and arriving in Toronto at 9:30 a.m., while Flight AI188 departs Toronto at 12:30 p.m. and arrives in Delhi at 2:05 p.m. the following day.

Via its Delhi hub, Air India offers onward connections to destinations across India, including Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and Kochi.

PART OF A BROADER FLEET RENEWAL

The Toronto deployment is part of Air India’s broader fleet renewal program, which includes orders for 600 new Airbus and Boeing aircraft. The airline has already inducted three Boeing 787-9s over the past six months, with additional 787-9s and Airbus A350-1000s expected later this year.

Air India is also retrofitting its existing widebody fleet. Two Boeing 787-8 aircraft with fully refreshed interiors have already returned to service, with three more currently undergoing upgrades in the United States. By the end of 2026, the airline expects more than half of its widebody fleet to feature new or upgraded cabins.
