Air Canada expands transborder network for summer 2027

MONTREAL — Air Canada is expanding its transborder network for summer 2027, with new routes from Toronto, Montreal and Edmonton – plus joint venture partner United Airlines is adding service to several more Canadian cities.

Air Canada will launch new nonstop flights linking Toronto-Louisville, Montreal-Indianapolis and Edmonton-Newark.

The Toronto-Louisville route will start in late April, increasing to daily service in May. Montreal-Indianapolis will provide another nonstop U.S. destination from Montreal, while Edmonton-Newark will give travellers direct access to the New York region and connections through United’s Newark hub.

Air Canada is also increasing capacity on its Edmonton-San Francisco route by deploying A220s.

United meanwhile is adding seasonal service between Newark and St. John’s, along with new flights from Denver to Ottawa and Quebec City. The airline will also increase frequencies between Washington, D.C., and Quebec City, and boost daily seat capacity between Denver and Winnipeg by 65%.

20+ NEW ROUTES SINCE 2022

The latest additions build on Air Canada and United’s transborder joint business agreement, in place since 2022. Since then, the airlines have introduced 20 new routes between Canada and the U.S., with more than 4.3 million passengers travelling jointly on the two carriers. The partnership has also generated more than five million additional transborder seats.

Together, the airlines serve 10 Canadian gateways.

“Air Canada and United’s long-standing partnership continues to deliver meaningful results for our customers and communities. For nearly three decades, Air Canada and United have worked to facilitate seamless travel and strengthen connectivity between Canada and the United States,” said Mark Galardo, EVP & Chief Commercial Officer, and President, Cargo at Air Canada.

United’s Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances, Patrick Quayle, said Canada remains an important part of the airline’s international network.

“Our schedule has grown every year since our transborder agreement was signed in 2022, and the new routes and flights we’re announcing today further underscore our commitment to investing in Canada and making travel between our two countries easier,” said Quayle.

Air Canada and United have also agreed to renew and expand their transborder joint business agreement, subject to regulatory approvals.

As reported last week Transport Canada has launched a public consultation into the carriers’ proposed expansion of their transborder joint venture.
