3) A Royal Hawaiian Luau, Aha Aina

Pretty much any traveller to Waikiki will know the Royal Hawaiian, shining in all its pink-glory, along Waikiki Beach.

Just a walk amongst the grounds comes with its own piece of history, as the opening of its doors in 1927 ushered in a new era of luxury resort travel for North Americans travelling to Hawaii. Who knows? Perhaps some clients may be interested in enjoying a luau here simply because Mad Men’s Donald Draper stayed at the hotel during Mad Men’s season six premiere.

So for clients who are not staying at the ‘Pink Palace’, getting to experience one of Oahu’s treasured luaus on property is at least one way to take in some of the Royal Hawaiian’s glory.

Taking place every Monday evening, Aha Aina is situated on a piece of Waikiki oceanfront once known as Helumoa, the legendary playground of Hawaiian royalty. The place is now called Ocean Lawn and along with breathtaking oceanviews, Diamond Head also rises up in the background.

This luau is not buffet-style, but instead Hawaiian-inspired delicacies and culinary delights are served tableside with cocktails. Aha Aina captures many of Hawaii’s time-honoured traditions at the onset of the evening, including kapa-making (cloth made of pounded bark), poi-pounding and na lawaiʻa (tending of fishing tools).

Guests are called to dinner with the sound of the pu (conch) and enjoy gourmet pupus (hors d’oeuvres) before arriving at their feast. Tickets price is set at $179 per adult and $101 per child (5-12). Ticket price for hotel guests is $169 per person.
