Sunwing monitoring Cayo Largo airport developments

TORONTO — Following reports yesterday that Cayo Largo’s airport is ready to receive aircraft, another tour operator says it is monitoring the situation for further developments.

Sunwing says: “Our destination and airport teams have received confirmation that the airport in Cayo Largo has been reopened as of Saturday February 22nd.

“We continue to monitor the situation closely however at this present time we anticipate no further impact to our operations.”

On Feb. 23 a representative with Cuba’s Ministry of Tourism posted on Facebook that Cayo Largo’s airport is ready to receive flights.

“Great news! The track at Cayo Largo del Sur airport is ready to receive medium and large planes. The excursions are restored. The unique and heavenly beaches of this Cuban destination are waiting for you!” said Carmen Casal in her post.

Transat is also waiting to confirm the reopening. “We are still waiting for confirmation that the type of aircraft operated by Air Transat can land and take off safely at Cayo Largo. For the moment, we still have the date of February 26 as information,” said Transat spokesperson Debbie Cabana yesterday.

Word of the airport’s temporary shutdown came Feb. 19. The Canadian Embassy in Cuba confirmed the unexpected closure, attributed to runway damage, in a series of tweets.
