ST. JOHN’S, NFLD — In case you’ve been living under a rock – or 93 centimetres of snow – Newfoundland has been buried underground following a historic blizzard last Friday.
A state of emergency in St. John’s and surrounding areas was called after many parts of the province were pummelled by a record-breaking snowstorm over the weekend. A new all-time daily snowfall record of 76.2 cm was seen in St. John’s on Friday, beating the previous record of 68.4 cm back on April 5, 1999.
With the white stuff continuing to fall throughout the weekend, parts of St. John’s saw over 90 cm, while snow levels in other communities like Mount Pearl and Paradise surpassed 100 cm.
The state of emergency in St. John’s entered its fourth day on Monday, prohibiting businesses from opening and cars from driving on roads. The Canadian Armed Forces sent 150-200 troops to Newfoundland yesterday, reports the CBC, with an approximately 100 more arriving today.
Despite being dumped on, Newfoundlanders shovelled their way out with a smile and a sense of humour. Many took to Twitter to make the best of the situation, as only Newfoundlanders can.
