Toronto’s Thompson hotel to be turned into Canada’s first 1 Hotel

TORONTO — The Thompson Toronto hotel will soon be getting an overhaul, complete with a new look, name and ownership.

1 Hotels will be taking over the property on Toronto’s King Street West to debut its first-ever location in Canada. Developed in partnership with Mohari Hospitality, the luxury hotel will undergo an extensive transformation before re-emerging as 1 Hotel Toronto.

It will remain open and operating as the Thompson until renovations begin.

“1 Hotel Toronto will introduce the city to a new standard for an eco-conscious luxury experience, and is the first of its kind in Canada,” said Barry Sternlicht, 1 Hotels founder and CEO & Chairman of Starwood Capital Group. “We look forward to sharing our mission to inspire conscious consumption with guests from across the globe as well as the local community. Our partnership with Mohari is key to the redevelopment of the project and we are pleased to be collaborating with them.”

The hotel’s transformation will be inspired by Canada’s natural beauty, the vibrant character of King Street West and the Toronto marketplace. 1 Hotels purposefully reuses existing structural and reclaimed materials gathered from local communities, including timber, driftwood and local limestone.

“Our operating philosophy reflects our commitment to sustainability,” said the company. “1 Toronto is not just a place to stay, it’s a palce to get inspired, focus, grow, connect and recharge.”
