Canadian travel to Switzerland holding steady

TORONTO — The latest numbers from the Swiss Federal Office of Statistics show Canadian arrivals and overnights steady compared to the previous year, which was an all-time record year. The last three months, including January 2017, are already showing moderate growth.

“Canadian travellers are ‘#InLoveWithSwitzerland,’” said Evelyn Lafone, Market Director Canada. “Canadians appreciate the rich cultural heritage of the Swiss cities as well as the natural beauty of the mountains.”

Over the last 10 years alone, the number of Canadians visiting Switzerland has been growing by a total of 30%.

There was an increase of 0.9% in Canadian arrivals in Switzerland, for a total of 103,534. The number of overnight stays from the Canada in 2016 was 227,173, a slight decrease of 3% compared to 2015, which was an all-time record year (only arrivals and overnights in Swiss hotels are counted; vacation homes, other kinds of accommodation and visits with friends and family are not included).

The most popular regions for Canadians are the Zurich region, Geneva region and Valais region. The Graubuenden had the biggest growth of 14.3% for Canadian overnights in 2016.
