Strike looming: Germany airports to cancel international flights

TORONTO — A German trade union has called for a strike at airports across Germany this Wednesday, which will cause all intercontinental flights to and from Munich to be cancelled. According to Deutsche Welle, Düsseldorf, Cologne and Frankfurt airports will also be affected.

A Lufthansa official said that all intercontinental flights leaving from Munich will be cancelled, as will many domestic and European flights. Tens of thousands of passengers will be impacted by the strike, which will end later on Wednesday.  The airline said that flights in Frankfurt will resume as normal after 3 p.m.

The German trade union Verdi is demanding a 6% wage increase for some two million public service employees, as well as a pay increase of 100 euros per month for trainees, according to tagesschau.de.

The next round of negotiations between the union and the government is scheduled for April 28 and 29. Verdi had already rejected an offer of a 3% wage increase over two years.
