OTTAWA — Statistics Canada has released its cross-border travel data for July 2026 – and the increase in overall return trips from the U.S. in July 2026 marks the fourth consecutive month of year-over-year increases.

Canadian-resident return trips by air from the U.S. in July 2026 were down, by 1.4%.

Return trips by car were up, meanwhile, by double-digits. The increase was 12.8%.

All told the U.S. saw a 10% YOY increase in overall Canadian resident return trips in July 2026, for a total of 2.3 million.

Since we’re now more than a year into the cross-border Canada-to-U.S. declines, the year-over-year differentials are narrowing amid the ‘new normal.’ When comparing the number of trips in July 2026 with pre-‘elbows up’ in July 2024, the drop in car trips was 28.9% in July 2026 vs. July 2024, and the drop in air travel was 26.8% in July 2026 vs. July 2024.

Year over year Canadian-resident return trips from overseas countries showed a slight decrease, by 1.4% compared to July 2025, for a total of 988,900.
