G in 3: Perspective, resilience and the true power of travel

If you turn on the news or scroll through your feeds right now, it is hard not to feel a heavy sense of anxiety. We’re hit with a constant barrage of headlines about the geopolitical climate, most recently with the escalating conflict in Iran, and naturally, that uncertainty ripples straight down to buying decisions.

When global instability hits, travel advisors are always the ones on the front lines. You absorb the hesitancy, answer the nervous questions and manage the sudden slowdowns.

Lately, we’ve seen a distinct softening in bookings across the industry. The reality is that Canadian consumers notoriously pause when faced with uncertainty. But if history has taught us anything, it’s that Canadians also bounce back incredibly fast. Pent-up demand is a very real thing, and as the initial anxiety gives way to travel fatigue, my gut tells me we are going to see a much bigger, later rush for summer bookings than normal. The message here? Hang in there, and be ready for the wave.

Part of managing this hesitation means helping clients separate noise from reality. Right now, we’re seeing some airlines unintentionally fuel buyer anxiety by canceling routes and citing fuel shortages related to the conflict. The reality? I’m sure many of these cancellations have far more to do with standard airline revenue management than actual fuel constraints. As advisors, part of our job is to gently cut through that scaremongering with facts, keeping our clients grounded.

But beyond the immediate business challenges, the current climate has me reflecting deeply on why we do what we do.

At G Adventures, our core belief is that travel can change lives. But I want to take that a step further: I truly believe that if more people travelled, the world would see far less conflict and a hell of a lot more tolerance. Travel is the ultimate antidote to ignorance. It forces us out of our bubbles, destroys stereotypes and educates us in a way a textbook never could. When you sit across a dinner table from someone whose life looks entirely different than yours, barriers melt away.

As travel advisors, you aren’t just booking vacations, you’re holding the keys to global education. You have the ability to make a positive impact on the world by keeping people moving.

Because when travel stops, the innocent suffer. We’re seeing this right now in places like Jordan and across the Middle East. Through absolutely no fault of their own, these incredible communities are seeing their livelihoods vanish because of the surrounding conflicts. From a personal standpoint, it is absolutely heartbreaking. Jordan is a country I have visited frequently in recent years; the warmth, the culture and the hospitality of the people there are unmatched. Seeing them suffer from the economic fallout of nearby wars is devastating.

Our responsibility as an industry is to be ready to support these countries the second it is safe to do so, guided by official government travel advisories. We cannot turn our backs on the communities that rely on us.

This month is tough, and the headlines are heavy. But let’s remember the bigger picture. Travel is a force for peace. Let’s keep guiding our clients with perspective, cutting through the noise and preparing for the bounce-back.

Thank you for everything you do to keep the world connected. Take care of yourselves and each other.
