The power of niche: How specialization is reshaping travel entrepreneurship

As travel continues to evolve, so too does the role of the travel advisor, with more entrepreneurs looking to differentiate, deepen client relationships, and build more intentional businesses. Across the Envoyage network, a growing number of advisors are discovering that success doesn’t come from offering everything, but from specializing in something and having the support to build a business around it.

“I realized I knew a little about a lot, but not a lot about any one thing, until I realized I did,” says Carol Hornsby of Your World Up Close.

Finding the Focus

For many advisors, a niche isn’t carefully planned; it’s uncovered through experience. Hornsby’s realization came from her own travels, from Iceland to Antarctica. “These experiences weren’t just a passion; they were the foundation for my expertise,” she says.

Wendy MacCrimmon’s moment was more immediate. “I remember being in Tanzania and thinking, ‘I’m coming back and creating group trips for women,’” she says.

Christine Wilson found inspiration in an unexpected place. “I was taking a pickleball lesson and got chatting with the instructor,” she says. “That’s how it all started.” What followed was a series of highly successful group trips built around a shared passion. “It opened my eyes to how much people love travelling with others who share the same interests.”

The Courage to Narrow In and Evolve

Specializing can feel counterintuitive in an industry built on variety. “Yes, I had hesitations,” says MacCrimmon. “I didn’t know if there was a market.” But narrowing her focus proved transformative. “Once I did, everything changed. It’s been the best decision.”

Hornsby shares a similar path. “I had to explore the full landscape to understand where I fit,” she says. “The shift came when I stopped trying to cover the entire map.”

As demand for her pickleball trips grew, Wilson also recognized the need to evolve. “I realized I needed to slow down a bit,” she says, shifting toward more flexible, community-based travel.

Expertise and Experience Matter

In niche travel, credibility is built through experience. “Clients want to hear what I’ve experienced and what sets one expedition apart,” says Hornsby. “That’s where trust is built.”

For MacCrimmon, differentiation comes from the details, including integrating her background as a professional photographer into her trips.

“Every woman goes home with a full gallery of high-quality images,” she says. “Adding that extra touch goes a long way.”

Community as a Catalyst

While each advisor’s niche is unique, all point to the importance of being supported in that specialization. “Without Envoyage, this dream would never have become a reality,” says MacCrimmon. “The support, the encouragement I feel like the sky is the limit.”

For Wilson, that support extends beyond tools it’s about people. “It’s incredibly important to have a strong group of people around you,” she says.

That sense of community, combined with access to tools, global product and industry expertise, is by design, says Envoyage General Manager Gail Banack. “We’re seeing more advisors embrace specialization as a way to differentiate and grow. Our role at Envoyage is to support that, giving them the confidence, resources and community to turn their passion into a thriving business.”

Looking Ahead

As the industry evolves, specialization is becoming less of a risk and more of a strategy.

Within Envoyage, advisors are proving that narrowing your focus doesn’t limit your business; it defines it. Because in today’s travel landscape, the advisors who stand out aren’t the ones offering everything, they’re the ones known for something.
