Acapulco cruise port set for major upgrade under new GPH agreement

ACAPULCO — Global Ports Holding (GPH) has signed a 24-year concession agreement to operate and develop the cruise terminal at Acapulco Cruise Port, marking the company’s first port investment in the country.

The agreement follows GPH’s selection as the preferred bidder by ASIPONA (Administration of the National Port System Acapulco), and covers a concession area of approximately 17,199 square metres.

Under the terms of the deal, GPH will implement phased investments aimed at enhancing cruise operations, improving passenger flow and elevating the overall visitor experience. Planned upgrades include improvements to terminal facilities, as well as the introduction of new commercial and leisure offerings for cruise passengers.

The company also plans to work closely with cruise line partners and local stakeholders to develop new shore excursions and destination experiences, further positioning Acapulco as a key stop on Pacific and Mexican Riviera itineraries.

“Acapulco is a destination with a rich history and strong potential within the regional cruise market,” said Mehmet Kutman, Chairman and CEO of Global Ports Holding. “We believe that, through close cooperation with ASIPONA and local stakeholders, we can help unlock this potential and support the continued development of cruise tourism in the region.”

In parallel, ASIPONA is expected to construct a new 350-metre cruise pier capable of accommodating larger vessels. The pier, which will form part of the concession area once completed, is currently scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2027 and is expected to significantly increase the port’s capacity.

GPH expects to begin operations in the second quarter of 2026, working alongside ASIPONA on planning and technical preparations.

News of the cruise terminal comes amid a period of resurgence for Acapulco, which includes a modernized waterfront, enhanced security infrastructure and new hotel openings.
