TORONTO — Amsterdam could be one step closer to making good on efforts to clamp down on overtourism, and cruise ship tourism specifically.
New reports say the city is considering eliminating ocean-going cruise ships entirely by 2035. River cruise ships would still be allowed to dock, however in limited numbers.
The city’s coalition government, including Amsterdam’s mayor and aldermen, floated the cruise ship ban proposal this week.
Amsterdam already limits the number of ocean liners allowed to call at the city (100 port calls in 2026). There have also been extensive discussions on moving the city’s central cruise port to the outskirts.
The city’s government made the cruise ship ban proposal after weighing the €85 million cost of moving the port to an industrial area, versus the €46 million cruise ship revenue would contribute to the city’s economy over the next three decades.
Amsterdam’s city council must still vote on the proposal, plus there’s a municipal election taking place this March.
