The Travel Industry Council of Ontario’s Board of Directors approved payment of $2,600 to assist one consumer who did not receive the travel services for which they had paid. The payment was due to the closure of Smartchoice Travel & Tours in Toronto. The Board also denied 54 claims totalling $164,470.12. One claim was filed beyond the legislated six-month filing deadline; one claim was based on the cost of travel services that were provided and 52 claims were denied due to insufficient documentation to support and/or on the basis that the consumer’s payment was not received by a registered Ontario travel agent.
