Tourism in Holguín resumes with Air Transat and WestJet arrivals

TORONTO — Tourism in Holguín is back on track as Cuba officially resumes operations in one of its most popular resort regions, just days after Hurricane Melissa passed through the area.

The first two commercial flights from Canada – operated by Air Transat and WestJet – are scheduled to touch down today, Nov. 5, at Frank País International Airport in Holguín, signalling a quick rebound.

The Cuba Tourist Board confirmed that recovery and rehabilitation work was completed in record time, thanks to a coordinated response from local authorities, national task forces and resort staff. Intensive clean-up and sanitation efforts were carried out, while essential services such as water, electricity, communications and transport have been fully restored.

Tourist facilities along Guardalavaca, Pesquero, and Esmeralda beaches are now fully operational and ready to welcome guests once again. According to the Tourist Board, the island’s signature warmth and hospitality remain at the heart of its recovery efforts.

“We would like to extend a special thank you to the travel agents who have kept customers informed at all times and have worked tirelessly to rebook and accommodate their clients,” said Gihana Galindo, Director of the Cuba Tourist Board.

The Cuba Tourist Board is encouraging Canadians whose travel plans were impacted by the storm to reach out to their travel agent or airline to rebook their holidays.

Earlier this week, the Tourist Board provided an update on hotel and air recovery. Hotels like Gran Muthu Almirante has been open since Oct. 30, while air travel to the region has largely resumed.
