Intrepid announces second mystery trip will take place in Southern Africa

TORONTO — Intrepid Travel is once again pushing the boundaries of adventure tourism with the launch of a new “Uncharted” mystery expedition through Southern Africa, inviting travellers to embrace the unknown and let go of the itinerary.

The 14-day journey, which begins in Harare, Zimbabwe, and ends on the historic island of Ile de Mozambique, will keep all stops and activities along the 1,500-mile route completely under wraps until travellers arrive. It’s the latest evolution in the company’s Uncharted series, and a direct response to a growing desire for spontaneity in travel.

“We run trips in over 120 countries and know our travellers always look to us to uncover new and exciting places to travel,” said Erica Kritikides, General Manager of Experiences at Intrepid Travel. “This itinerary is intrepid in every sense of the word, and I’m confident that this will be our best mystery trip yet.”

The global B Corp-certified tour operator says the expedition will be led by one of its most experienced local leaders and will include everything from swimming beneath waterfalls and hiking up mountains, to connecting with local communities through immersive cultural experiences. Accommodations will range from tents under the stars to locally-owned hotels. Overland travel will be primarily by truck.

Intrepid notes that traveller demand is shifting away from hyper-curated, screen-led travel in favour of authentic experiences and unstructured exploration — trends that have helped fuel the return of the Uncharted concept.

“This mystery trip taps into the nostalgia of our earliest Intrepid trips, where every journey held an element of surprise and the unknown. It appeals to the most intrepid travellers – those with a sense of adventure who are prepared to take a leap of faith and go well beyond the beaten path,” Kritikides adds.

This will be Intrepid’s second-ever Uncharted journey. The first took place in 2018 and brought 34 travellers through the remote Altai region from Kazakhstan to Mongolia via Russia. That trip received more than 1,000 applications in just 10 days, with the first departure selling out in only 16 hours.

Details of the new mystery trip include:
