Nathalie Tanious

INTERVIEW: Red Label’s Nathalie Tanious on the many changes in travel and the one destination that truly surprised her

TORONTO — Nathalie Tanious has always had a deep connection to travel. From a very young age, she knew that it wasn’t just about exploring new destinations, but rather a gateway to new experiences and personal growth. This lightbulb moment is what propelled her into the world of travel, setting her on a path that would eventually lead to her current role as President and CEO of H.I.S.-Red Label Vacations Inc.

Recently taking over the reins from Frank DeMarinis who retired in July 2023, Tanious is reflecting on a 35-year career in travel that started with a modest part-time position at Jet Vacances. While simultaneously working in the reservations department and studying tourism at school, her love for travel grew into a deep-seated passion that carried her through various roles at many Canadian travel companies over the years. The experiences she gained from nearly 40 years in the industry has equipped her with the knowledge and expertise necessary to lead one of Canada’s largest travel companies today, she says.

In this latest instalment of Travelweek’s Interview series, launched in celebration of our 50th anniversary, we asked Tanious about the changes she has seen in the travel industry, what changes she would still like to see made today, and her advice for other females just starting out in travel.

What was the travel landscape like when you first started out in the industry?

“It was an entirely different world when I first started in the travel industry! The workplace culture had its own unique charm, and we certainly didn’t have the technology we have now. I can’t help but smile when I think back to how personal connections with our travellers were the bedrock of our operations. These connections were pivotal in building trust with our clients, a value that’s as important today as it was back then. We understand the enduring importance of these principles in delivering exceptional experiences in travel.

“This is exactly why while we are continuously implementing new technological advances, we’re not looking to take a shortcut. We want everyone who is a part of the Canadian travel industry, whether it’s our team, travel agents or travellers, to feel a sense of authentic care from us. And we’ll do this by revitalizing the personalized service and people-centred practices that defined our industry.”

What are some things about the travel industry today that you would like to see changed or improved?

“I’m deeply committed to advancing sustainability in the travel industry, prioritizing responsible practices that protect our planet and support local communities. It’s imperative that we take care of both the environment and the well-being of the people who call these destinations home.”
.

What are some standout memories early on in your career that helped shaped you professionally, or solidified your passion for travel?

“Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to experience countless memorable moments that have sustained by passion for travel. I’ve experienced the exhilarating highs of success one day, only to confront significant challenges the next. Nevertheless, the exceptional individuals and mentors I’ve been blessed to have around me have been instrumental in my journey. They have instilled within me a profound sense of resilience and an abundance of gratitude for what we get to do every day: make people’s dreams come true!”
.

You’ve certainly worked with countless travel agents throughout your career. How have you seen their role in travel’s ecosystem evolve over the years?

“Travel agents have undoubtedly gone through quite a transformation in recent years. They’ve moved beyond just booking trips to becoming trusted advisors and curators for travellers. The rise of AI will certainly bring new changes, but the human touch and first-hand experiences will always be at the heart of the travel business.”
.

No doubt you’ve been to many places throughout your career. Can you tell us about one destination that really surprised you?

“One destination that genuinely surprised me and underscored the transformative power of travel is Egypt. Although I was born in Montreal, my family hails from Egypt, so I’ve had a lifelong connection with this incredible country. As someone deeply involved in the travel industry, I’ve always appreciated the ability of travel to broaden horizons and foster personal growth. But when I went to Egypt in 2019, it showed me that even when you think you know a place, there are always new dimensions to discover.”
.

You’re a powerhouse in this industry, particularly as a female in travel. What advice do you have for other females just starting out?

“My advice is to feel the fear and do it anyway! Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, and don’t be afraid to speak up and take on leadership roles. Surround yourself with mentors and colleagues who support your journey. The travel industry is diverse and inclusive, and there are no limits to what you can achieve.”
.

What’s your favourite thing about working in the travel industry, at at TravelBrands?

“I really believe that we are in one of the happiest industries in the world! Every day, we get the profound satisfaction of being a part of travellers’ journeys and turning their dreams into reality. Travel has the power to inspire, transform, heal, support, motivate, and shape us. Even the hiccups in our travel plans become part of the adventure. I’m eternally grateful for the joy our industry brings to the world, and I extend my heartfelt thanks to our entire TravelBrands team of travel legends, partners, and industry colleagues who contribute to making this possible.”
