New Orleans officials have broken ground on a new terminal at the Louis Armstrong International Airport.

Mayor Mitch Landrieu, members of the New Orleans Aviation Board and other officials gathered Thursday at the airport for a ceremony touting the planned $826 million project.

In a news release, the city said the 760,500-foot terminal will have 30 gates and a parking garage that can fit up to 2,000 cars.

The new terminal plans also include a new power plant, a hotel on-site and a flyover addition to improve access from the freeway to the airport.

The terminal currently in use dates back to 1959.

The airport saw an all-time high of 10 million passengers last year. The new terminal is scheduled to open in October of 2018.
