Fam participants discover the heart of Kentucky icons: bourbon, horses and bluegrass music

LOUISVILLE, KY — A group of Canadian travel and trade professionals got a first-hand look at Kentucky’s rich culture, history, and entertainment scene earlier this month, as part of a Kentucky Tourism travel agent fam trip.

Hosted by Casey Canevari, Senior Manager, Global Trade Development, Brand USA in partnership with Kentucky Tourism, the fam included three Ontario-based agents and three Quebec-based agents. Air travel was courtesy of Air Canada.

Against a brilliant backdrop of the vibrant fall colours, the carefully curated fam highlighted Kentucky’s iconic landmarks as well as the timeless traditions that define the Bluegrass State during its most picturesque time of the year.

KEENELAND: ELEGANCE & EQUINE EXCELLENCE

Fam participants were awestruck by the grace and beauty of thoroughbred racing at Keeneland’s Fall Meet, nestled in the heart of Kentucky’s scenic horse country. They witnessed world-class racing, explored the historic grounds, and soaked in the unmatched atmosphere of this legendary racetrack.

Keeneland is renowned for its timeless beauty and architectural charm. The paddock area, grandstand, and clubhouse exude an air of classic elegance, providing a nostalgic nod to the golden era of horse racing. Guided tours offer an opportunity to delve into the history and significance of this iconic venue.

“For those seeking an elevated experience, Keeneland offers VIP packages that include access to private suites, gourmet dining options, and exclusive viewing areas. These packages provide an unparalleled level of luxury and comfort for racegoers,” said Chenelle Mcgee, International and Group Sales Director for Kentucky Department of Tourism.

EVAN WILLIAMS BOURBON EXPERIENCE

After a day at the races fam guests immersed themselves in the world of bourbon at the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience in Louisville, KY. Engaging their senses, they learned about the art of distillation, sampled exquisite bourbons, and delved into the history of this cherished American spirit.

A highlight of the week was an immersive behind the scenes tour of the Evan Williams Distillery. Guided by expert Whiskey Jean, attendees journeyed through the history of bourbon-making in Kentucky, from the early days of Evan Williams himself to the modern, innovative techniques employed today. The tour included a speakeasy old-fashioned cocktail tasting with specially selected aged bourbons and an immersive experience with the creator himself, Tom Bullock.

BLUEGRASS MUSIC IMMERSION

Characterized by the banjo, fiddle, guitar and mandolin, the soulful sounds of bluegrass music carried participants away on their musical journey, setting the stage for their departure city of Nashville. They experienced live performances by talented Bluegrass musicians, learned about the roots of bluegrass, and even tried their hand at picking some strings at the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and Museum. It was an unforgettable celebration of a musical genre that calls Kentucky home amidst the golden hues of fall.

Insider tip: Although music is available year round in Kentucky, Owensboro’s ROMP Festival is a can’t-miss annual event that celebrates the roots and branches of bluegrass music each June.

Additional fam highlights included …
