More flights, more visitors: Grenada’s tourism boom

ST. GEORGEʻS — As this tri-island southern Caribbean nation counts down the days to next monthʻs Spicemas, there’s already plenty to celebrate in the tourism sector including Air Canadaʻs recent addition of a second weekly flight from Toronto.

The expanded service saw Monday flights added between YYZ and St. George’s (GND), effective June 2 and running through Aug. 31.

Last month, Grenada also welcomed a new CEO, Stacey Liburd, taking the reigns of the Grenada Tourism Authority, after previous CEO Petra Roach transitioned to the private sector.

Liburd begins her tenure at a time of ongoing successes for the Spice Isle; by December 2024 Grenada had experienced 26 months of steady growth thanks to increased airlift and targeted marketing strategies.

Last year Grenada also experienced an increase of visitor numbers by 17% in year over year, increased spending and longer length of stay.

Grenadaʻs Minister for Tourism, the Creative Economy and Culture, Adrian Thomas, said, “We are excited to welcome Mrs. Liburd to Grenada. Her accomplishments within the tourism sector speak for themselves, and we believe her leadership will guide our industry into its next phase of innovation, sustainability and inclusive growth.”

A recent press trip hosted by the Grenada Tourism Authority showcased this increasingly popular destination, its resorts and attractions.

ISLAND ATTRACTIONS

With numerous beaches, hiking trails and stunning waterfalls including Seven Sisters and easily-accessible Annandale with a new, larger viewing platform and restaurant, Grenada’s natural areas are poised to welcome more adventurers.

One of the most popular island attractions is Molinere, the world’s first underwater sculpture park. Grenada has expanded this popular snorkelling and diving area with 31 additional sculptures, inspired by Spicemas carnival.

Despite challenges from last year’s Hurricane Beryl, sister island Carriacou has debuted A World Adrift, a new underwater sculpture park featuring 30 boat sculptures inspired by climate change. All sculptures have been created by artist Jason deCaires Taylor, who created the art for Molinere.

Drop into House of Chocolate in downtown St. George’s, with daily demonstrations on the creation of chocolate from cacao to bar, a wide selection of chocolate made by Grenadian companies and tempting art, crafts and fashion from local entrepreneurs or wander lively St. George’s Market for street food, fresh island produce and island-made products.

The country’s oldest standing fort, Fort St. George is being restored; the Fort George Revival Project will reopen the historic site this Fall to include a museum, restaurants and bars.
