Who owns your clients? 7 questions you should ask your host agency

By Jill Wykes on behalf of The Travel Agent Next Door

Before you sign on the dotted line to renew your agreement – or to join a host agency – you need to do your homework! It pays, quite literally, to take a little time to really understand what you are getting into.

And more importantly, how you can get out of it.

1. Who owns your clients?

You do! You want to be certain that your customers ARE your customers and that you can you take them with you when you move.

2. How long do you have to sign up for?

You could be signing for multiple years! Ask when you sign the original contract if it will auto- renew for the same number of years.

3. What are the terms for leaving your host agency?

How much notice must you give? Are there any penalties? Do you get commission for past sales after you leave?

4. What are the terms for renewal of your existing contract?

Does your host agency automatically renew you for another full term contract? Ask NOW if your contract will auto renew or not!

5. Does your host agency charge you start-up costs?

Does your host agency charge you for things such as business cards, stationery, training, etc.and if so, how much?

6. Are there strings?

Make sure you have not been tied up with a non-compete clause that says you can’t work for any other agency for a period of time.

7. How much of my commission do I keep?

This is THE most important question of all. Be sure to compare host agencies to find the one where you can keep MORE – or all – of your commission.

It’s all in the fine print, people, so read carefully and ask these questions!
