Storm Frank grounds flights, closes attractions, cuts power in England

LONDON — Heavy rains and gusty winds are causing more problems for residents in large swaths of Britain. The worst affected regions are Northern Ireland and Scotland, where Storm Frank hit causing power cuts affecting thousands of homes, ferries cancelled and planes grounded.

Flights at Belfast International airport and London Luton Airport have reportedly been disrupted. And fierce crosswinds have forced passengers to endure nerve-wracking landings flying into Edinburgh and Manchester, as pilots struggle to land.

Some tourist attractions in the country will be closed and local transportation remains difficult in some areas.

However, the number of “severe” flood warnings has dropped as many rivers in northern England are receding from record-high levels. But, environmental officials warn that the ground remains heavily saturated, making it likely that more rains could quickly lead to flooding.
