REYKJAVIK — Is WOW air heading to Asia? It’s definitely a possibility now that the airline has purchased seven new aircraft, four of which are jumbo-jets.
According to Iceland Magazine, Iceland’s budget airline is stirring up speculation that it will soon launch service to Asia with the newly purchased jets, although CEO and owner Skúli Mogensen has refused to confirm the rumours.
However, he did tell local news sources that the company was “very interested in Asia”. He also noted that the cost of flying from Asia to Iceland was “unnecessarily high”, with passengers typically having to make one or two transfers en route.
Last year, WOW air received its first jumbo-jets, which enabled the airline to launch direct flights to destinations on the U.S. West Coast.
With these new additions, WOW air’s fleet now comprises a total of 24 planes. Mogensen said that the company aims to double the number of passengers from three million this year to six million by the year 2019.
