Travel goals: Abandoned kittens become top adventure cats

VICTORIA, B.C. – Two women from Victoria, British Columbia are proving that sometimes it’s okay to pick up a couple of rogue hitchhikers.

While loading up their car for a weekend hiking trip, Kayleen VanderRee and Danielle Gumbley discovered two abandoned kittens behind a stack of trashcans. They made the spontaneous decision to bring the two kitties on their trip, keeping them tucked away in their jackets or wrapped up around their necks.

“We figured the kittens were small enough that we could carry them with us,” said VanderRee in a report by GrindTV. “They did end up peeing on our sleeping bags at night, but other than that they took to the adventurous lifestyle like they were born for it.”

Since then, the now grown-up cats – named Bolt and Keel – have become world travellers in their own right, joining their owners on excursions over both land and sea. They’ve hiked most of a three-hour venture to an alpine lake, and also spent a week on a sailboat. The furry sidekicks even have their own rain jackets, life jackets, scarves and pannier bag, plus an Instagram account that documents their adventures.

“Although we get a lot of weird looks, everyone has been extremely positive,” added VanderRee.
