G Adventures reports rising demand for celebration travel at sea

TORONTO — G Adventures is reporting a surge in milestone-driven travel as the Mediterranean sailing season gets underway, with more Canadians opting for small-ship experiences to mark life’s biggest moments.

The company says marine travel bookings among Canadians have increased by 27%, fuelled by demand for more meaningful, experience-led travel that prioritizes connection over traditional sightseeing.

According to G Adventures, travellers are increasingly choosing sailing trips to celebrate occasions such as proposals, anniversaries, birthdays and group milestones, with a notable rise in full-boat bookings where families or groups of friends charter an entire yacht.

Central to the experience are G Adventures’ Skipper CEOs (Chief Experience Officers), who play a key role in facilitating these milestone moments, from planning surprise proposals to organizing private celebrations in remote locations.

“Modern travellers are looking for moments that feel genuine rather than manufactured, which is why those special moments happen so naturally on sailing trips,” said Dave Hunter, Sailing Operations Manager and previous Skipper CEO at G Adventures.

“We’ve had travellers propose on the bow of the yacht, on remote islands atop a hill, in a caldera with the famous Santorini sunset, on a private beach with no public access, you name it. It creates the perfect environment for something meaningful and memorable without forcing it.”

DRIVING FACTORS

The company points to several factors driving the trend of marine milestone travel, including the desire to avoid crowds. Unlike larger cruise ships, G Adventures’ small vessels are able to access secluded bays, hidden beaches and lesser-known coastal destinations, creating a more private and flexible experience.

The ‘sea-gagement’ trend is also catching on, with couples getting engaged early in the week and spending the remaining days celebrating with a built-in group of revellers, whether it be long-time or brand new friends.

There is also growing interest in more purposeful travel, with itineraries designed to support local communities through visits to family-run marinas and sourcing fresh, local ingredients.

MEDITERRANEAN SAILINGS

The start of the Mediterranean season also coincides with the launch of a new itinerary along the Amalfi Coast, expanding G Adventures’ sailing portfolio in the region.

The new seven-day Sailing the Amalfi Coast: Capri, Positano & Coastal Bliss includes highlights like the volcanic thermal springs of Ischia, the Blue Grotto in Capri, limoncello trastings in Sorrento and private cooking classes.

Other popular itineraries include Sailing Croatia: Dubrovnik to Split, Sailing Greece: Santorini to Mykonons and Sailing Italy to Croatia.

G Adventures also sails to Montenegro, Thailand, Sri Lanka and more. For the full G Adventures marine collection, go to gadventures.com.
