Online booking site releases attack ad on Australian agents

Booking site webjet.com.au has infuriated travel agents in Australia by releasing an advertisement insulting the profession.

The 30-second commercial features a woman packing while telling a friend, “So I said to the travel agent, ‘only four flights?’ We knew there were heaps more from looking online, and she [the travel agent] goes ‘maybe five’…” The woman then says to her friend “We can do better than that ourselves.” The ad’s tagline is “Make Your Own Way in the World.”

Here is the full ad:

One agent penned an open letter to the website on KarryOn, writing;

“I guess giving our customers a professional opinion that was gained by undertaking plenty of self-funded travel, months of training, webinars, product nights and client feedback is… stupid.

Sure, we probably won’t waste our valued customers’ time by offering dozens – nay – hundreds of potential itineraries ranging from quick-and-painless to daft and backbreaking.

But, I guess that’s stupid.”

You can read his full letter at karryon.com.au.

What do you think? Is this ad just preaching to the choir or do you think this ad would sway more people to book online? Let us know on our Facebook comments:
