Old plan to extend runway at Palm Beach airport revived

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Officials are reviving a decade-old plan to extend the runway at Palm Beach International Airport.

A 2005 proposal to extend the generation aviation runway to allow for larger commercial jets was shelved in the economic recession, which caused a steep drop in traffic at the airport.

It’s being reconsidered amid strong tourism numbers across the state. PBIA reported a 3.4 per cent increase in passengers last year, and an increase in traffic is forecast over the next two decades.

Initial calls for a runway expansion have led to complaints from homeowners east of the airport, as well as real estate magnate Donald Trump.

The Palm Beach Post reports a revised master plan for the airport is expected to be complete in 18 months.
