Visit Detroit gears up for Motor City Pride, taking place June 7-8

DETROIT — Visit Detroit has put together an info-packed visitor’s guide in celebration of Pride Month.

Noting that the month of June, marked with Pride festivities in cities around the world, “is a powerful celebration of love, identity, and the ongoing fight for equality,” Visit Detroit adds that it’s a time to honour the strength, courage, and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community — past, present, and future. “And where better to celebrate than in Detroit!”

Motor City Pride, Michigan’s largest Pride festival and parade, will light up downtown Detroit this coming weekend, June 7-8.

More than 65,000 attendees will make Motor City Pride an unforgettable weekend filled with live entertainment across four vibrant stages, hundreds of vendors and local artisans, and dynamic community groups coming together in celebration, says Visit Detroit.

Rooted in Detroit’s rich LGBTQ+ history, Motor City Pride began with a pivotal march in June 1972, protesting discriminatory laws and calling for LGBTQ+ rights and equality. The city’s first official Gay and Lesbian Pride festival was organized in 1985 by Craig Covey, then director of the Michigan Organization for Human Rights, marking a major step forward in visibility and community celebration.

“Indulge in mouthwatering eats from local food trucks and immerse yourself in the colour, energy, and joy of this powerful weekend of pride and unity,” says the tourism board.

WHERE TO STAY

Visit Detroit notes that for those traveling to attend Motor City Pride, LGBTQ+-friendly hotels in Detroit offer more than just a place to stay: “They provide a welcoming environment where authenticity is celebrated. These spaces foster safety, community, and connection, often hosting inclusive events and offering tailored amenities for LGBTQ+ guests. Supporting these businesses not only enhances your travel experience but also uplifts those actively promoting diversity and acceptance in the hospitality industry.”

Hotel Indigo

From the soulful sounds of Motown to the rise of rock ‘n’ roll and hip-hop, music has shaped Detroit’s identity since the 1930s — and it lives on in every corner of the boutique hotel. Each of Hotel Indigo’s 241 guest rooms and suites blends Motown-inspired décor with mid-century modern design, celebrating the city’s legendary musical roots. Located in the heart of downtown, the hotel draws inspiration from the surrounding neighbourhood’s vibrant culture.

Hotel David Whitney, Autograph Collection

The Hotel David Whitney, part of the Autograph Collection, features 136 beautifully appointed rooms and suites, each precisely designed to reflect a sophisticated urban retreat. The property is a distinguished gem in the heart of Detroit’s downtown area. The building was erected in 1915 and is one of the most important structures in Detroit. The hotel’s stunning lobby, with its ornate plasterwork and Tiffany-style glass dome, creates an atmosphere of grandeur and opulence from the moment guests arrive.

Beloved by both locals and visitors, this bar offers a warm, judgment-free atmosphere and genuinely friendly staff.” Another favourite is Gigi’s, “a Detroit staple for decades, drawing loyal regulars with its strong pours and spectacular drag shows.”
